The Guy I left Behind

Saturday morning 11-23-04. Hwy 17. Pouring rain. Headed to Carmel to meet Nate and Sam and see Nate's new baby. There was a guy in a dark green rain slicker hitiching about halfway up 17. I stopped in the pullout but he didn't bother turning around to see me parked. 6:30 AM and this guy is here in the rain? Too oblivious to see me parked there waiting for him? I unsnapped the pepper spray casein case he did see me there and ran up to the car. The thing that was creeping me out was that he wasn't broken down, no car, and there was no side street there.... so where did he come from? Maybe it was a hunch, maybe I was being paranoid, I split. I was enjoying my solo mission anyway and this was just a little too wierd. Even for me!

Past hitchikers

The thing about hitchikers, is they are all so different. And yet sort of the same. I like to pick them, Some of the best hitchikers were:
The big guy that may or may not have been escaping a cult.
Mike, the rodeo rider
Getting picked up in France by two friends from Tahoe
The kid in Big Sur that said he had walked to Mexico and back
The kid from Big Sur who'se dad owned the huge ranch down there
The guy that may or may not have just gotten out of jail

Brian or Dave

Picked up a guy the other day at Moss Landing. Brian or Dave, I can't remember. Nice guy. Said he had been traveling for eight? years. Nice stuff, newer bkpack clothes, not smelly. Kind of a spacy dude. Said a moonset was the coolest thing he had seen. He had alos seen a golden eagle in Nevada recently. Said his dad is a trader (computers or stocks or something) and that he was going to purchase him a bluberry farm. (Blueberrries have the most natural medie in them). said it was odd that the car stereo had evolved to have six buttons becasue that was the same thing that had happened to shark gills in the couyrse of history they went from 5 to six.

I took him to the hostel becasueI had to go by there anyway. He left his bags in my car and walked around for an hour then came back late.

I took him to Juice and Java to fix a kiosk then Hwy 1.

He asid he just really enjoys cruising around meeting people. We talked a bit about experience and computer's chance of human thought, what would havve to happen.

Nice guy. A bit wierd, but deffinetley worth picking up.
